Gifted and Talented

ELA

The GT Magnet ELA program is focused on academic writing and literary analysis. Over three years, Magnet students learn and practice 9 different essay types, from Exemplification to Classification and Division. Every quarter, students write one formal essay of increasing complexity. Second quarter, though, students are allowed to be more expressive.

For 13 years, the Magnet ELA students have written and illustrated books:

  • 6th graders write poetry expressing their identity.
  • 7th graders write essays about their beliefs.
  • 8th graders write stories of resilience in their lives and the lives of those close to them.

After the writing and feedback process, students illustrate their writing and their books are published by Student Treasures. It’s a wonderful keepsake, especially for students who are with the program all three years of middle school.
